What Does A Clutch Do & What Is A Clutch Kit?

The clutch is a solid metal disc that couples the crankshaft and flywheel to the gearbox’s clutch shaft.

The clutch is located between the engine and transmission to temporarily disconnect the engine drive from the gearbox.

clutch kit usually contains all the elements to replace and rejuvenate your clutch and its performance: usually a clutch disc, pressure plate, flywheel and a throw race or release bearings.

A clutch kit will contain the correct parts for a particular make and model of car and is often cheaper than buying the components individually.

How Often Should A Clutch Need Replacing?

Determining when to replace a clutch kit isn't tied to a specific timeframe or mileage, as it varies based on both your vehicle and driving habits.

Generally, clutches are engineered to endure around 60,000 miles, but their lifespan can span anywhere from 30,000 to 100,000 miles, influenced by factors such as driving style and vehicle specifications.

Will A Clutch Fault Affect My MOT?

A malfunctioning or shattered clutch can impact your car's driving performance, potentially leading to a failure in its MOT.

The MOT testing process, however, does not involve a detailed inspection of the engine, clutch, or gearbox.

Therefore, as long as these components seem to be functioning properly, they should not negatively influence the test results.

What Happens When We Replace Your Clutch Kit?

Our certified technicians will comprehensively replace your clutch and advise you on any related issues or parts that may need replacement.

After installing the clutch kit, we thoroughly test and adjust it for peak performance, ensuring your vehicle is in top-notch condition and ready for optimal performance on the road.

What Causes A Clutch To Stop Working Correctly?

A clutch will wear out over time through normal wear and tear but also driving habits and resting your foot on the clutch pedal when driving can cause abnormal wear.

What Are The Common Symptoms Of A Malfunctioning Clutch?

Like any component in your car or van, over time, the clutch will wear - just like the shoes on your feet. If your clutch is worn, you may notice a high biting point which makes it difficult to change gears without stalling, a juddering or vibrating when the pedal goes up, or rising engine revs even when driving on flat roads at a consistent speed.

Clutch slips while driving: If you feel a loss power when changing gear or accelerating, it could be due to a damaged or worn clutch.

Changing gears is a problem: If you can’t change gears or it feels like there is unusual grinding and friction when trying, your clutch isn’t separating the engine drive from the gearbox sufficiently.

The car doesn’t move: If there is no delivery of power to the engine from the accelerator, then your clutch could be the problem.

Jerking/ Vibrations when clutch pedal is pressed to the floor: a potential flywheel issue, worn or bent clutch disc.

Gearbox makes unusual and unhealthy noises: If the transmission makes unhealthy grinding noises when you try to use the clutch to engage or disengage the engine, there’s a strong chance that your clutch isn’t operating as it should.

How Long Does It Take To Change A Clutch?

The average clutch replacement will take between 2 and 8 hours, depending on the car you have and whether there is any other damage caused by the worn clutch that needs to be fixed.
